National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu is set to conclude his campaign activities with rallies in Nansana Municipality and Busiro East, marking the final push in his bid for the presidency ahead of the January 15 vote.
Kyagulanyi is expected to address supporters in Busukuma, Nansana Municipality, before proceeding to Mende in Busiro East, where another rally is scheduled.
The events form part of his nationwide mobilisation effort as he seeks to consolidate support ahead of polling day.
Campaigning in parts of Buganda has frequently been marred by confrontations between Kyagulanyi’s supporters and security forces, with both sides blaming the other for instigating disorder.
Security agencies have at times deployed tear gas to disperse crowds, while several supporters have been arrested.
In cities such as Gulu and Mbarara, NUP leaders reported that many supporters were still detained or nursing injuries allegedly sustained during clashes with security personnel.
Despite these tensions, Kyagulanyi has consistently urged his supporters to remain calm. As he left his home for the final rallies in Busukuma and Mende, he appealed to followers to respect traffic laws, maintain order during processions, and avoid actions that could escalate violence.
The concluding rallies come amid a highly charged political atmosphere, with Kyagulanyi positioning himself as the main challenger to incumbent President Museveni in what promises to be a tightly contested election.
